When a record-breaking ice storm hit the Deep South in the winter of 1951, Deviney was a small service provider that maintained rights-of-way for telephone and electrical utilities in central Mississippi.
Founded five years earlier by W.C. Deviney Sr. (an emerging self-made entrepreneur), the company was called in to assist in the major restoration of telephone and electrical services for the majority of the state of Mississippi. The storm turned out to be the company's defining moment; by the time full services were restored, Deviney had bought, borrowed and rented additional equipment and grown from 50 to nearly 1,000 employees.
The storm taught Deviney that challenges and opportunities sometimes go hand in hand, and it taught our customers that Deviney could be counted on in times of crisis. Even more remarkable than the company's growth is the fact that those same electrical and telephone utility companies that have gone through massive technological and corporate changes in the intervening years still use Deviney to meet their day-to-day needs.
